Our speakers
Nia Parker
Nia is a mother of a young adult with a diagnosis of Down Syndrome. Nia’s lived experience gives her a good understanding of accessing services and support, particularly in rural and regional areas of our state where Nia has worked as a physiotherapist. Her areas of interest include employment, social opportunities, and independent living options.
Associate Professor Jenny Downs
Jenny Downs is Head of the Child Disability team at Telethon Kids Institute. Her current program include research on rare developmental conditions such as Rett syndrome and more common developmental conditions such as Down syndrome. Jenny has led the development of outcome measures of functional abilities and quality of life. She has run clinical trials investigating early developmental interventions and how to increase physical activity in disability. Her research is guided by her vision that all children with disability will live with better health and quality of life, making sure that interventions to support their needs are evaluated with rigour and consistency.
Dr Sébastien Malinge
Dr Sébastien Malinge is a molecular biologist researcher and lab head at Telethon Kids Institute – Cancer Centre. He is specialised in the field of childhood leukaemia, with strong scientific background in understanding the mechanisms of leukaemia predisposition and development in children with Down syndrome. Sébastien also sits on the DSWA board.
Dr Colin Derrick
Dr Colin Derrick is a Consultant Pediatrician who works in the child development arena, in the rare diseases clinic and in acute Paediatrics at PCH. He established and runs a clinic for Neurofibromatosis at PCH as well as being involved in research into self harm and ADHD as well as Neurofibromatosis and ADHD. Colin trained in South Africa and the UK and currently work at PCH, Child development services and Rockingham hospital.
